Stat of the day: Flexible working

By Angela Matthews

You may have seen an article in the press last week discussing the business case for flexible working. The article says, “When it comes to going ‘the extra mile’, it is those who actually work flexibly who are more willing to give more back.” Statistics provide another angle for this ‘business case’. 60 per cent of disabled people not currently in work because of their disability said that flexible working is one of the adjustments that would help them work, and almost 50 per cent of disabled people in work said that flexible working hours have helped them to stay in their jobs (Source: Life Opportunities Survey, 2009/11). So perhaps it is not so much, “It is those who work flexibly who are more willing to give back” as much as “It is those who work flexibly who are enabled to give back”.
